Zombie Movies

By Tony (@TonySolo)

My fascination with zombies began after seeing George A. Romeros, Night of the Living Dead. I don’t remember exactly when or how old I was when I first saw it. I just recall being frightened by the idea that my dead and buried relatives might one night show up for dinner, me being the main course. The opening scenes of  Dawn of the Dead 2004
(2004) sum it up best.  Ana (Sarah Polley) and her husband Luis (Justin Louis) are woken up by an infected neighbor, who proceeds to kill him. He suddenly comes back to life and tries to eat Ana. She discovers the chaos happening in her neighborhood as she escapes from her home and ravenous husband. What’s scarier than your family and friends attacking in herds?

While the Resident Evil films may have ushered in this modern era of Zombie movies, they weren’t the only quality zombie movies produced since 2002. There have been some good films released  in the last ten years or so, notably Land of the Dead (2005), Shaun of the Dead (2004), with  Zombieland  (2009) and Steve Nile Remains (2011) being two of the more recent  ones.  What about Warm Bodies (2013) you ask. I haven’t seen it and I don’t plan on seeing any movie that is targeting the “Twilight” market. (That would be females 8-22 years old and their Mommies) I may send my 15 yr old daughter to see it and bring back a report. Chance are she will love it.

The other piece of the puzzle that makes Zombies so appealing and scary is that in most stories, the Zombie Apocalypse begins as some sort of infection. Epidemics are real. We’ve had recent Swine and Bird flu outbreaks, and everyone remembers Mad Cow disease. Every Summer time we have to watch out for the West Nile virus. I think an epidemic that turns people into flesh eating zombies is more believable than an alien invasion or giant lizards attacking Tokyo. The recent resurgence of Zombie movies might have taken some people by surprise; I am not one of them. We’ve had some really good films, that were well made, and well received. It is the Resident Evil series that is most notable here. The first movie Resident Evil (2002) was based on the Capcom video game. The plot was pretty straightforward. The Umbrella Corporation is credited with beginning the zombie apocalypse as a result of creating the Tyrant-virus. While the T-virus was used to create Bio Organic Weapons for the black market and shady-governments, it was their overall goal to develop a "superhuman", named Tyrant in honor of the virus.  The film was met with mixed reviews but was a box office success, to date the five films in the franchise have earned close to a billion dollars worldwide.

Obviously we can’t have any discussion about Zombies without mentioning AMCs highly popular “The Walking Dead” series. It is based on the comics of the same name written by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard. Since its premiere on Halloween 2010, the show has garnered high praise from critics and received many award nominations. The series has also attained strong Nielsen ratings, beating various records for a cable series, including receiving 10.9 million viewers for its season three premiere to become the most-watched basic cable drama telecast in history.

There are many Zombie movie lists on the web. Melissa and I looked at many of them and then compiled this list. This list contains the movies we both agree are our favorites and we’d recommend to others.
